Licenses

Reading, navigating, searching and exporting a chart is always free — no license, no registration, no trial to start. A license is required for one thing only: Edit Mode, the ability to propose changes to a chart.

How a license is checked

The visual checks for exactly one thing: a license token, pasted into Format visual → License → License token. This is the path for a Customputing.com-issued license — purchased, promotional, or an evaluation grant from registering for a trial (see below). All three arrive and verify the same way, as a single signed token, checked entirely on your own device.

Without a token, the chart stays fully readable — every tab, every export, every navigation feature works exactly the same. Edit Mode simply doesn't unlock, and the status line reads Unlicensed — Read Only.

Every instance of the visual needs its own token. If a report uses the visual on more than one page, or twice on one page, each is a separate instance with its own format-pane properties — the token has to be pasted into each one individually.

License scope

A token is bound to one of four scopes, set when it's issued. The status line shows which one is active:

ScopeBound toWhat that means in practice
PersonalOne named personWorks only for that specific user. If a report carrying the token is shared with someone else, the token simply won't verify for them — the text is still there in the report's properties, but verification checks who's actually opening it.
TenantOne Power BI tenantWorks for anyone within that organization's tenant, regardless of who pasted it in. One license covers the whole organization — which also means anyone at that org who receives a copy of a report with the token embedded gets the same access.
CloudOne sovereign cloudWorks across an entire cloud environment (e.g. GCC, GCC High, DoD) rather than a single tenant — the right scope for an organization operating across multiple tenants within the same cloud.
FullNothing — unrestrictedWorks anywhere, for anyone who has the token. Reserved for cases where a narrower scope genuinely doesn't fit; once embedded in a shared report, it works for whoever opens that report, anywhere.

Whichever scope applies, a token also carries either a real expiry date or a permanent grant. The status line shows both duration and scope together, e.g. License: Tenant — 90 days left (expires 2026-12-01).

Choosing a scope when requesting a license. Personal suits an individual report author; Tenant suits a whole organization sharing reports internally; Cloud suits an organization spanning several tenants in the same government cloud. Mention your situation when you request a license and the right scope can be issued.

The free trial

Register as a user on Customputing.com to get a free evaluation license. Registration issues a real, time-limited license token by email or text message — verified and enforced exactly the same way a paid one is, just shorter and free.

Already registered and your trial has ended? Additional trial or beta (early adopter) tokens may be available — reach out to admin@customputing.com and mention you'd like to keep evaluating.

License cost

Edit Mode access, at any scope. Prices below are annual; a forever license (a one-time purchase, no renewal, a permanent grant with no expiry) is also available at any tier — mention it when you request a license.

TierPriceCovers
Individual$10 per year, or $1/monthOne named person — a Personal-scoped token (see License scope above).
Command — 10 tokens$90 ($9.00 each) per year A batch of individual, Personal-scoped tokens at a discount, for a command or unit distributing licenses to its own people. Not a distinct scope the way Tenant or Cloud are — there's no way for the visual to detect which command someone belongs to, so this is a bulk discount on ordinary Personal tokens, not a technically different kind of grant.
Command — 20 tokens$160 ($8.00 each) per year
Command — 50 tokens$300 ($6.00 each) per year
Command — 100 tokens$500 ($5.00 each) per year
Tenant$1/user for a 5-year term, or a comparable forever price — exact quote depends on tenant sizeEveryone within one Power BI tenant — a Tenant-scoped token, one purchase for the whole organization, from a 20-person office to a DoD tenant with well over a million users.
CloudContact for pricing (see below)Everyone across an entire sovereign cloud (GCC, GCC High, DoD) — a Cloud-scoped token, for an organization spanning several tenants in the same cloud.

100 tokens is the largest Command batch listed here; for more than that, reach out directly. Additional tokens at the same rate your command already agreed to can be added at any time — a bulk order doesn't have to be a single, one-time purchase. Later purchases that reach the next tier of total users will receive that tier's bulk rate.

A token in a Command batch isn't reassignable on its own. Each one is bound to one person, the same as any Personal-scoped token. If someone leaves, their specific token can't simply be handed to their replacement — it has to be revoked and a new one issued, and revocation takes effect the next time readers update to a newer version of the visual, not immediately. Plan for turnover with a little headroom in the batch size, or reach out when someone leaves and a token can be revoked and replaced.

Requesting a license

License purchases and registration through Customputing.com are coming soon. In the meantime, reach out directly and a token can be issued manually:

Email admin@customputing.com to request a license

Mention which scope fits your situation (see above), and whether you're requesting a trial, a purchase, or have a feature request — the same address handles all three.
